The San Fernando Valley is a fun and underrated city with plenty of things to do. It may not have the glamour of Hollywood, or the theme parks of Anaheim, but it certainly has a lot to offer visitors. It’s also home to some amazing museums, including The Museum of the San Fernando Valley.
The Museum of the San Fernando Valley is a museum dedicated to preserving and promoting the history, art and culture of the San Fernando Valley. It offers a variety of programs for Valley residents and visitors, such as Narrating Lives, Oral Histories, Historic Walking Tours, Speaker Series, Public Art Initiative, and Horses Across The Valley. It is also home to an outdoor sculpture garden featuring the work of Levi Ponce, Shahin Atighe, and the Knapp Family.
This is an absolutely amazing little museum that everyone should visit if they are in the area. It is the perfect place to learn about the history of the SFV, and it has so much stuff to see! You will find exhibits about the Westmore family (movie and TV makeup), famous SFV-based photographers George Hurrell and Leigh Wiener, movies stars in the SFV, architecture, veterans & wartime artifacts, and even a room that celebrates mid-century modern furniture with pieces like molded Eames chairs.
In addition to the main exhibits, the museum has a large collection of historical photos, books, maps and documents. Many of these are displayed in a timeline that shows the growth and development of the SFV over time. This is a great resource for students of Southern California History, and it provides a single source of primary sources that were once scattered throughout university archives and in private collections.

The Museum is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 1-5pm. It’s not well signposted from the street, so you’ll need to trust your GPS or parking app and just go there! It’s in a commercial building filled with other businesses, so just go up to the second floor and look for the Museum.
The Museum of the San Fernando Valley is one of those hidden gems that you might pass by on your way to work or school every day, but it is worth a visit! It’s a really fun and interesting place with so much to see and do. You will leave feeling like you’ve learned a lot about the history and culture of this wonderful city!
