In a dingy strip mall out in the San Fernando Valley, this straightforward saloon has managed to do what many people thought was impossible – become an iconic rock & roll club. Founded in 1976, it’s still a dive bar in the best sense of the word but now showcases local and national rock, punk, alternative, blues and country acts 6 nights a week on its tiny stage. Owner Tim Cook and his wife, Linda, are hard-core music fans who possessed an astonishingly huge collection of ticket stubs before they bought the place in 2007.
The no-cover policy surely helped (bands share in the bar’s revenue), but it was the steady stream of top quality acts that really brought the Sugar Mill into contention for rock & roll status. It’s been named the best dive bar in Los Angeles, featured on Eye on LA and got a spread in LA Weekly. A slew of well-known musicians and bands — from Dave Grohl to Slash, Joe Bonamassa and members of Green Day, Bad Religion and Quiet Riot — have jumped on its stage.
The bar has been a favorite of regulars for over a decade, and you’ll often find a friendly face behind the bar. It’s also a great place to bring visitors and out-of-towners. Tasty causa and a friendly staff make for an enjoyable time.
