Artificial Grass Installation Phases

Synthetic lawn design and planning

  • In order to best help you achieve your goals for this project, one of our Professional Design Consultants will work with you to create a clear picture of your overall vision. Our design and diagram will help us figure out how much work the project will be. We're also trying to create as few seams as possible so that it looks more like a lawn when we're done. We can provide you with an accurate estimate of your investment now that we know the scope of your project. If needed, we can continue to change the design until it meets all of your requirements. Once the design is set, we will use it to order the right amount quantities of material.

Pre-demolition

  • We cannot start tearing down the building until we find and mark all of the utility lines (electrical, gas, water, etc.), including sprinklers, to avoid any issues. If the customer wants, we can either put a cap on the sprinkler system for later use or take it out entirely. We need to include anything that would be added or changed to current utilities in our estimate.

Demolition

  • In areas where a bobcat can access, it will be used to demolish your current soft-scape and/or hard-scape surface. However, other demolition tools like saws may be necessary for places the foundation is protruding and taking up useful space in front-, back-, or side yards.

Excavation

  • We will remove 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches of soil from the final grade.

Grading & Drainage

  • If you need to install drains, do so at this point in the process. You should also consider how water will flow away from your house.

Install Optional Border

  • For a cleaner look and to avoid damage, we will install a bender board or a paver mow strip around the edge of your project where it meets soft-scape surfaces.

Sub-base Compacting

  • We will use a plate compactor to compact the sub-base. Avoiding any air gaps in our system is crucial, as they can result in undulations or depressions later on if this step is skipped.

Base Preparation & Compaction

  • We will spread two to three inches of Class II Road Base evenly across the entire surface of your turf project. (This is for a Southern California installation. Other regions have different requirements.) After we set the base, we will hose down the floor and compact it until we reach a compaction level of 95%. At this point, if you drive over the prepared base with a bobcat, you shouldn't see any tire marks. That's because it is literally as hard as a rock - which is exactly what you want.

Weed Barrier Fabric

  • After the base preparation, we recommend that a weed barrier fabric is installed, which will reduce the chances of weeds making their way to the surface of the final installation. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that this will work for every weed. We can do our best to destroy the weeds that are already present, but it is nearly impossible to get rid of all the root systems. Oftentimes, you'll find weeds at the edge of your turf. Even though we try our hardest, it's nearly impossible to keep all borders secure. People sometimes think that artificial turf means no maintenance is required, but that's not true – it just requires less upkeep than real grass. Although you can't neglect newly installed turf, it doesn't require as much work to maintain as other types of grass. Neglect it completely, and eventually, it will begin to look shabby. All grasses need some level of maintenance, regardless of what a salesperson might tell you about their product.

If you have pets that use your artificial turf as their bathroom, we do not recommend installing the weed barrier. Not only does the weed cloth prevent weeds from growing, but it also soaks up urine. If your pets have been relieving themselves in that spot for a while, it will be very tough to eliminate the smell. We recommend our solution to remove the urine odors on your artificial turf.

Turf Preparation

  • Unroll your turf entirely and let it sit in the sun during the initial preparation process. The turf has been rolled up like a carpet, so we need to eliminate any wrinkles or bunching. If you don't do this step, you might see some air pockets later as the artificial grass eventually gets a chance to settle down. Plan to avoid having too many seams in your artificial turf. You can achieve this by planning the grass installation properly. Once you have positioned the fake grass, eliminate any excess that won't be used. This will make it simpler to work with overall.

Seaming & Trimming

  • Once the artificial turf has been perfectly laid out and all the excess material has been trimmed, we are ready to seam the pieces together. It is crucial to ensure that all the rolls of grass are laid in the same direction so that the blades all point the same way. There are several seaming techniques, and the basic technique used on a particular job can vary from job to job, depending on the circumstance. There are several ways to install artificial turf, including seaming tape and adhesives or sewing it down. The most popular residential method is tacks or nails. Once all the seams are complete,grass-like trimming should be done along all the seams and edges of the grass.

Border Preparation

  • The best way to secure the border is by nailing down the perimeter with 40-60d nails 4-6 inches in length. Place them 1-2 feet apart around the entire perimeter of your project.

Infill Preparation

  • To prep, the turf for infill installation, use a power broom to sweep in the opposite direction of blade orientation. This will help keep blades upright and allow for the infill to reach the grass base beneath the turf.

Infill Installation

  • The infill helps anchor the turf, allows the blades to stand up after being stepped on, provides a more comfortable surface, and depending on what type of infill you use, there may be other advantages (for example: prevents germs from accumulating or breaking down, reduced heat consumption/overheating). To create a more natural appearance, you want to leave 5/8″ of the Blade of Grass exposed. The infill needed will depend on the type of synthetic lawn chosen because every product differs. Installation metric regarding pounds per sqft – this determines how many pounds of infill are needed for every square foot of artificial grass installed.

Final Trimming & Clean-up

  • Check if any blades of grass are askew, and give the project a once-over. If it looks good, finish the infill install by hosing down your new lawn. Your artificial lawn installation will be complete and ready for use!

Pet Maintenance

  • We highly recommend that you have a chemical solution on hand to rid any smells (urine, feces, etc.) if your pets use your newly installed artificial grass as their restroom. That way, you can enjoy being outdoors without any offensive smells.
